Garden, Week 2

Nothing too exciting happening in the gardening front. My plants are getting bigger and looking good! Here is week 1 for comparison. As you can see pretty much the only difference is that they are a little bigger. The tomato plant has quite a few flowers on it so I am hopeful that I will get a decent number of tomatoes.

And the good news is that no rabbits have gotten to my plants yet!

2011 Garden

I was inspired by my friend Jack's rocking container garden, and decided to give container gardening another shot. Long-time readers may remember my garden from last year. I'd call it moderately successful. I did grow some plants, but a lot of them ended up as breakfast for a furry critter.

So this year I'm trying gardening 2.0, the table top edition.

But first, I had to do some serious damage control. At some point this spring some weeds decided to take over my pots.

Anyway, I got rid of the weeds, added some fresh soil and went to town. The result - a table top full of plants!

I have: tomatoes, cucumbers, zucchini, bell peppers, basil, sage, and rosemary. I planted A LOT of basil. I really love basil and want to have enough to try to make homemade pesto this summer.

In fact, once I finished I had a few more plants than I had pots so I created a little bed next to my house for the extra basil plants. The pieces of wood were left in the yard by the previous owner so I decided to repurpose them. Hopefully that (or the scary flamingo from my mom) will be enough to keep the rabbits away but we will see!

Wascally Wabbits!

So, we've had a casualty. A rabbit got to my tomato planet this morning. By the time I saw him the plant was a goner so instead of chasing him off right away, I took his picture. At that point he might as well have enjoyed his meal!

Guess I won't be growing any more tomatoes this summer!

Garden, week 4

Good news! The garden has recovered from the great flood of 2010 and now it is growing out of control! I think that rain really did it good! One of the pepper plants is flowering and the tomatoes have a ton of flowers on them. There is 1 baby green tomato growing! The cucumbers and zucchini grew A TON! I think I am going to have lots of zucchini this summer!

You may remember that last week my carrots were laying down and under water. Good news - they've recovered and they are looking pretty good. There is one random plant growing in the carrot pot. I am going to keep it around to see if I can figure out what it is.Blogger likes to turn my images sideways...I don't know why! It takes so long to upload images and I do not appreciate sideways images! :)

It is raining....

So, it has been raining here since last night. We are in serious need of some rain down here so overall this is good news. I just wish it didn't happen all at once! My garden loves some water but this is a little out of control!

Not sure if you can see the standing water in my poor carrots! I think they are drowning!!

I dumped some of the water out and tried to shelter the pot from the rain which is basically impossible given that it is basically a monsoon out there.

After I dumped out the water my carrots were lying down. Now, I'm no gardening expert here but this seems bad.

Garden, week 3

Garden is definitely getting bigger! I have a TON of flowers on my tomato plant so I am real excited for some tomatoes to start growing! My peppers almost look like they are ready to go too - very exciting! Neither the sage nor rosemary have sprouted and I am thinking that at this point they probably won't be. Bummer. I may try to replant them to see what happens.

The exciting development this week was - cucumber sprouts!!

Garden, week 2

My garden has been growing and I am so excited! Since last week, I've added 3 more pots - 2 with cucumbers and 1 with rosemary. The peppers are getting taller and the zucchini has basically gone out of control! I think I have lots of zucchini in my future! The basil has gotten significantly larger too. It smells AMAZING. I wish a picture could capture the smell of fresh basil.

There have been 2 new developments that are pretty exciting. My tomatoes are flowering which means it won't be too long before I have some baby tomatoes growing. And finally, I have 1 tiny carrot sprout! I put a ton of seeds in this pot so I am hoping to see a lot more soon!!

The sage, rosemary, and cucumbers haven't sprouted yet but I am hoping to see some little sprouts in the near future!!

Garden!

One of my favorite parts about my new house is having the outdoors just outside my door! I am so excited to try growing some veggies this year. Ideally I would prefer to plant these in the ground but I don't really have 'ground' so I'll have to make do with planters. Anyway - I have 2 tomato plants from Candice in the back right. The long planters have 3 bell pepper plants and 1 zucchini plant. I am hoping that the zucchini will grow over the side. The front left has sage seeds, next to it is basil (SUPER excited about this one) and in the big pot I scattered carrot seeds because I think that would just be fun to grow your own carrots. I still have some rosemary seeds and cucumber seeds so I think I need at least 1 more pot. I know the plants are a little cramped in the pots but I've got limited space so they will just have to make do!

I'm hoping that these plants will produce a decent number of veggies. This combined with my CSA will hopefully keep me well stocked all summer!
